Kirssi wins Prologue on HP2 Enduro

BMW Motorrad Motorsport team rider Simo Kirssi proved without question that he was the best rider up Erzberg's iron mountain this year when he recorded the fastest time in the Prologue, having already won the twin-cylinder class race two days previously. Finishing ahead of 2006 twin-cylinder class winner David Knight to win the 'Knigsklasse' event for the first time, Simo then recorded a best time of eight minutes 44 seconds to top the results of the Iron Road Prologue. In adding a winning performance in the Prologue to his twin-cylinder class victory Simo made it a perfect two from two for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team and their HP2 motorcycles at the 2007 Erzberg event. With the 500 fastest riders in the Prologue qualifying to start Sunday's Hare Scramble, Kirssi - although well aware that he would only be competing in the Hare Scramble for fun aboard his 1200cc HP2 Enduro - set about bettering the time that earned him victory in Thursday's twin-cylinder race.

UPDATE 1-Motor racing-Hamilton on pole for US Grand Prix

INDIANAPOLIS, June 16 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton captured his second pole position in a row at the U.S. Grand Prix on Saturday to put more pressure on McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso.

The British rookie, who celebrated his first Formula One pole in Canada last weekend, pipped double world champion Alonso in final qualifying on another sizzling hot day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Sunday's race will be the third in a row with an all-McLaren front row. Championship leader Hamilton, the winner in Montreal, leads Alonso by eight points in the championship after six races.

After struggling in the last two races, Ferrari returned to form by sweeping the second row with Brazil's Felipe Massa clocking the third fastest effort followed by Finland's Kimi Raikkonen.

Honda denies talk of interest in Harley

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co. (7267.T: Quote, Profile, Research) has denied it is looking to buy Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG.N: Quote, Profile, Research), rumors of which had sent the U.S. motorcycle maker's shares surging in New York on Friday.

"There's absolutely no truth to it," Honda spokeswoman Makiko Yoshida said in Tokyo on Monday.

Despite skepticism from analysts and market participants, Harley-Davidson shares and options surged, with 58,535 options changing hands on Friday -- more than 14 times the daily average, according to figures from market research firm Track Data.

Its share price gained as much as 6.4 percent before closing Friday's session up $2.43, or about 4 percent, at $62.55 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Shares in Honda, the world's biggest motorcycle maker, reacted little in Tokyo, ending up 0.5 percent on Monday at 4,420 yen.

Residual values of used cabriolets rose by 5% in May, according to EuroTax Glasss, who put the rise in residuals down to the good weather in spring.

Mass-market models such as the Volkswagen Eos held on to a greater proportion of their value than premium brands such as Lexus and Maserati, according to the figures.

The Ferrari F430 Spider held onto 97% of its value over 12 months, with the 2-litre TDi Sport Eos retaining 94%.

In joint third are the Porsche Boxster S and Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG on 87%, followed by the MINI Cooper S Convertible, the Audi RS4 Cabriolet, and the Jaguar XK Convertible.

The land of Timbaland

When super producer and rapper Timbaland adopted his hip-hop moniker in the early 1990s, he probably didn't know how appropriate it would end up being.

Named after the Timberland boots that were, at the time, a staple of street fashion, the artist has been making good use of his footwear by giving the music industry a swift kick in the pants.

BitTorrent Launches A Legal Video Download Store

BitTorrent hopes a well-stocked digital film store with thousands of titles at reasonable prices can wean its audience away from pirated video.

BitTorrent launched its long awaited BitTorrent Entertainment Network Monday, hoping that its well-stocked digital film store with thousands of titles at reasonable prices can wean its audience away from pirated video.

Claiming 135 million users, the company said its software features a digital rights management system that blocks users from copying and sharing files. In an effort to convince its audience -- primarily young males -- to use the network, the firm has deliberately set content prices low. New release movies are priced at $3.99, for instance.

Gaming Grows Up: Are You On the Bandwagon?

Video gaming has been a hot topic in the CI industry for the past few years, with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 bridging the gap between strictly gaming devices and home entertainment experiences.

Sony's PlayStation 3, which we have covered in depth, has had its fair share of criticism (from launch delays to price to availability), but at $600 for the high-end model, it's the cheapest Blu-ray player available. Although there have been complaints about difficulty integrating it into home A/V systems, there are some hacks available, like controlling the PS3 via IR.

Microsoft's Xbox 360, on the other hand, is currently the only Media Center Extender available, has an external HD DVD drive, and offers HD downloads of movies and TV shows.

At last week's EHX, Andrew Finkel of Westminster, MD-based Diversified Technologies ran the Custom Gaming Mini Camp, showing attendees how installers can profit from integrating gaming systems into their client's homes.

How to build a successful buy to let portfolio

Would you like to use property to fund your retirement instead of relying on a company or personal pension? I spoke to someone who has done just that to find out what budding investors need to do to retire as a property tycoon. Madeleine Smith is a lady who has taken her retirement finances into her own hands, investing in a portfolio of one, two and three bedroom properties. Here Madeleine explains why she chose property as the way to save for a comfortable retirement.Madeleine comments: I invested in properties not far from my home, so can drive past and check on them regularly. I have tried to stick with properties under 130,000 and also properties that fall under the stamp duty barrier to maximise my future returns. When I retire, I intend to keep my portfolio and hope to benefit from rising rental incomes, as well as obtaining further equity releases built up over time.

New online Missourian sheds light on the city鈥檚 darker deeds

Imagine being able to do the same thing with restaurant inspections, business licenses, or dozens of other pieces of information.

The process has been slower than I hoped. There were several negotiations with police over providing specific street addresses. Technical issues prevented one database from talking to another; instead, Missourian reporters write down each incident report at the police station and type it in later.

Still, City Manager Bill Watkins has responded favorably to the idea of more documents electronically delivered to citizens.

It's our information, after all.

Currency Risks in 2007 Outlined in UAE Seminars

The seminar will be conducted by Boris Schlossberg, Senior Currency Analyst and Amro Abdu, Senior Middle East Trading Manager of FXCM, the Wall Street currency trading firm.
Schlossbergs first presentation is Forex Trading Opportunities in 2007: How to use the US Fed, oil prices, and the Chinese market for high-probability trades.
According to Schlossberg, the key to the 2007 world economy and hence the currency market will be the US housing market, the US Federal Reserve, and China with oil prices as a wild card.
This year offers especially serious forex market risks and opportunities, said Schlossberg, because the world could face a serious economic slowdown in the second half of this year.
What happens to the global economy may well hinge on the health of the US housing market, which is currently experiencing an economic hangover.

China eases curbs on banks for offshore investments

China is to ease curbs on offshore investments in a bid to reduce the rising tide of liquidity in the financial system, state press reported on Saturday.

The new rules widen the scope of a government programme for banks and other institutional investors to tap more than four trillion dollars in national and corporate savings, the Shanghai Securities News reported.

The move by the China Banking Regulatory Commission is also aimed at easing appreciation pressure on its currency and the pace of growth in foreign reserves that, at 1.2 trillion dollars, are already the world's largest.

According to the commission, individual bank customers will be allowed to invest a minimum of 300,000 yuan (38,900 US dollars) in offshore stocks.

Stocks can account for up to 50 per cent of the net value of an offshore investment product offered by a bank, with the net value of a single stock capped at five per cent, the regulator said.

Private equity is preferred alternative investment

The latest poll of Trustnetusers indicates that private equityis the favoured style of 鈥榓lternative' investment by the investment community.

Offered the choice of classic cars, fine art or wine, hedge funds/futures/options derivatives, horses or private equity, more than 38% of all respondents, mainly private investors and financial advisers, chose private equity. Hedge funds/futures/options derivatives pipped fine art or wine to second place polling 19.2% and 18.6% respectively. 14.5% chose classic cars as their preferred alternative investment vehicle while horses trailed with a luke-warm 9.6%.

The online survey, carried out during April 2007, was triggered by a recent FSA consultation paper proposing funds of alternative investment funds. Although private equity products were voted first choice consistently by private investors and professionals alike, the survey reveals an interesting disparity between private investors with financial advisers and those who go it alone, in other categories.

Lohmiller trial underway

DELPHI - Nearly two years after charges were filed in August 2005, a jury trial began Monday in Carroll Circuit Court to decide the case of former Carroll County Health Nurse Rebecca Lohmiller.
Lohmiller, 56, allegedly committed multiple counts of forgery, Class C felonies, and practicing nursing without a license, Class B misdemeanors.
The charges relate to Lohmiller's use of the initials R.N., Registered Nurse, on documents she signed while in her position with Carroll County, and the apparent inability to prove she was licensed as a nurse in Indiana.
In total, six counts of forgery and 21 counts of practicing without a license were filed following an investigation in 2004, and read in court Monday afternoon by Special Judge Linley E. Pearson from Clinton Circuit Court.

Mylan Goes On a Drug Binge

Some snakes can swallow animals that are much bigger than themselves, and apparently so can some generic drugmakers. Mylan Laboratories (NYSE: MYL) announced yesterday that it was buying German pharma Merck KGaA's much-larger generics drug business.

The $6.7 billion all-cash deal will more than double the size of Mylan, which has an under-$5 billion market capitalization. Merck's generics segment's $2.4 billion in 2006 sales is nearly double Mylan's 2006 fiscal year top-line results.

Mylan will pay for the deal by issuing up to $2 billion worth of stock and stock-related debt. In an industry where size does matter, this deal gives the new, combined Mylan much more weight in terms of top-line sales than its competitors like Barr Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: BRL) and Watson (NYSE: WPI).

DoubleClick Hopes to Touch Industry 'Nerve'

24/7 Real Media ran ads in the days after the pending deal was announced asking, "Google to buy DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. Good for them. Good for you?" DoubleClick in response released a statement on Friday that assured customers it would not marry ad data with Google's trove of consumer Web behavior information. The campaign is part of a broader corporate rebranding exercise that features a new logo for the company, developed by Ogilvy & Mather's branding group. It was in the works for over nine months, CMO Marianne Caponnetto said, long before Google inked a deal to buy DoubleClick for $3.1 billion two weeks ago. "The nerve center reflects the fact that we are at the nexus of the marketplace," she said. "We serve both the leading buyers and sellers of the marketplace." Caponnetto said the "nerve center" positioning was developed based on customer feedback prior to the Google deal, and the new circumstances did not warrant a change in approach.

Panic Selling Hits Optionable: Buying Opportunity Created?

This morning, the Bank of Montreal reported that it lost $404 million from natural gas trading. This spooked shareholders of Optionable Inc. (OPBL), a provider of natural gas and other energy derivatives trading and brokerage services, who were already on the edge following an April 16 New York Post article that took note of the fact that, according to Optionable's latest 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Bank of Montreal accounted for 24% of the firm's revenues. The article also cited that this particular business proved to be more lucrative for the company, generating 77% gross margins, compared with 56% for transactions with nonrelated parties. Sources told The Post that a single trader at the Bank of Montreal, commodity trader David Lee, was responsible for that business.

Qantas share slide on the cards

THE Qantas share price has stayed remarkably firm a week since the corporate takeover debacle, but analysts are predicting a slide is in the wings.

The airline's shares soared 16 per cent, from $4.20 to $4.86, after the announcement of a private equity bid from the Macquarie Bank-led Airline Partners Australia in November.

The stock eventually peaked at $5.39 before the takeover consortium conceded defeat last week, and closed relatively unscathed at $5.19 on Friday.

Many experts predicted there would be more damage - some expecting the stock to plummet to the mid-four dollar range - as opportunistic hedge funds fled. Among the doomsayers was company chairwoman Margaret Jackson.

"If anyone thinks this will happen without affecting the (share) price then they have a mental problem with how the market works," she said in March.

Rounds plus nine: State's first family a government mainstay

PIERRE - For residents of Pierre, state government is Citibank or John Morrell or one of the big-name hospitals in Sioux Falls.

It's the place to find work.

During the 2006 campaign, critics started rumors that as many as 37 members of Gov. Mike Rounds' family worked for state government. The inference was that the Republican governor who grew up in Pierre in a family of 11 siblings with a dad who was for a time a state employee, had hired a bunch of brothers and sisters and kids.

That wasn't the case, but there were some new hires and there are plenty of Rounds relatives on the state payroll.

Various personnel and other state records show, besides the governor himself, nine family members in various agencies.

All but three of those people - Jamison Rounds at the University of South Dakota, Brian Rounds at the Public Utilities Commission and Carrie Rounds at the Department of Human Services - were working for the state before Rounds became governor in 2003.

Grand Theft Auto is No Game to NYPD

After a 14-month investigation, authorities put the brakes on an auto-theft ring that stole over 60 cars in the metropolitan area, most of them from Queens and Brooklyn.
Estimates put the value of the stolen cars at over $2 million. Many of the vehicles were recovered in other states, including Florida, Georgia, and Michigan, with some turning up as far away as Mexico.
"[The ring] specialized in fulfilling demand for luxury automobiles by stamping new vehicle identification numbers on stolen automobiles and selling them to out-of-state buyers," explained Queens District Attorney Richard Brown last week after announcing the charges.
Dubbed "Operation Key Code," undercover officers watched the ring at work, which was a highly organized operation of specialized labor. According to the charges, ringleaders Deshawn Eaddy, 29, and Jose Tavarez, 24, both of Brooklyn, coordinated the entire operation.

Health insurance not the same as health care

In the March 5 Register, state Sen. Jack Hatch began an important conversation about fixing our broken health-care system. However, he failed to identify the true reform that is needed in this state.

In his op-ed, Hatch compared health-insurance coverage to our requirements to possess automobile insurance. Automobile and health insurance can not be considered analogous. A consumer of automobile insurance usually shops around, comparing prices and coverage before making a decision. This is not always the case with health-care coverage, where options are limited. Individuals find high premiums with minimal coverage, often opting for higher deductibles in order to have basic coverage.

Health insurance provides support to individuals and families to cover health care.

Lawmakers Give Old Auto Law New Spin

Mar. 28--TALLAHASSEE -- A Senate insurance committee on Tuesday took the Legislature's first major stab at rewriting the state's mandatory automobile insurance laws. In so doing, the members unanimously passed a bill that manages to irritate just about everybody: doctors, hospitals, lawyers and most auto insurance companies. The state's "no-fault law," also known as personal injury protection, is scheduled to vanish on Oct. 1. That law requires all Florida motorists to carry $10,000 worth of auto insurance coverage to pay the health care costs for injuries in any wreck, no matter who caused it. Proponents of the no-fault law say it keeps minor crashes from clogging the courts and ensures timely payment, especially for those who don't have any health care coverage. Opponents say it already leads to lawsuits, is prone to fraud and forces those who already have health insurance to pay for duplicative coverage.

Trying to maintain a way of life before it disappears

This place, the neighborhood or neighborhoods, community or communities we live in — the Lower East Side, Loisaida, the East Village, part of Chinatown, call it what you will — is undergoing a scale and pace of change wrenching the life, many of our lives, from here.

Change is inevitable — neighborhoods change, as the city, state and nation do. But much of our wrenching change is allowed too easily — it does not have to be; we have the wisdom to live otherwise.

The zoning governing our space is grossly inadequate. Everyone should know that Ludlow St., at 50 feet wide one of the narrowest streets in New York, is slated to become a canyon of high-rise hotels and apartment buildings. People should know that Avenue C is losing its last hardware store and a shoe-repair shop is hard to find.

Budget fails to receive any applause?

The detractors of the Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, may have had a field day in holding back their applause for the 2007 Budget in spite of buoyant revenues, much above projections and expectations, rising foreign exchange reserves, record foreign direct investment at $10 billion, high savings rate at 32 pc of the gross domestic product or GDP, record foreign remittances at $23 bn and 9.2 pc annual growth rate- the highest in independent India's history. How is it that even though the world is impressed by what is considered India's near economic miracle has not been adequately appreciated at home?

What has gone wrong? Is it pure politics of the right and left? It would seem so. Even the defenders of the Budget within the ruling party and its allies and outside supporters are somewhat muted in their words of praise.

CarMax Disappoints as Used Car Prices Fall

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- Used car retailer CarMax Inc. (KMX) on Thursday said fiscal fourth-quarter net income rose 15% driven by a 12% increase used vehicle sales and an income boost from its financing unit.

The Richmond-based retailer added, though, that used vehicle selling prices moderated "slightly" in the fourth quarter from earlier in the year and wholesale vehicle average selling prices were down.

CarMax has seen healthy sales in the past year and has expanded its store base by 15%. The company has set up a no-haggle, low-hassle used car superstore model.

Despite turmoil among U.S. auto makers, sales at car dealerships has remained relatively strong.

Net income for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 28 increased 15% to $42.1 million, or 19 cents a share, from $36.7 million, or 17 cents a share, a year earlier, adjusted for a 2-for-1 stock split on March 26.

This one goes out to all the kids whose parents tell them to quit playing video games and do something meaningful, like memorizing an encyclopedia. The next time that happens, just say to mom or dad: "I'm trying to increase the spatial resolution of my vision, so would you get off my back? But first, bring me a Coke and some chocolate chip cookies, please." Or words to that effect.

Researchers at the University of Rochester published research recently suggesting that people who played video action games a few hours a day (what, that's all?) improved their ability to process certain visual information by 20 percent. They could read and interpret a standard eye chart a lot better than those who hadn't been playing video games.

The researchers hope to convert such findings into useful purposes such as help for individuals with amblyopia, or "lazy eye." It could be just one more example of suddenly converting to societal value a much-derided object, just as happened last year with Eddie Murphy in "Dreamgirls."

Gas guzzler tax may drive us to change

Would you buy a fuel-efficient car if you got a tax break because of it? Will new tax rules in this week's federal budget mean the final, merciful end to commuter pickup trucks, single-passenger SUVs and needlessly thirsty muscle cars? Not likely.

Taxes on cigarettes and alcohol have helped reduce consumption of those products, but only slightly. We're not going to see a run on Toyota Corollas or a halt to Hummer sales just because of a rebate or an extra levy.

But times are changing quickly. And the end is near for needlessly big vehicles. Inexplicably, North Americans still associate big automobiles with success. In most

European communities, it's long been an embarrassment to be seen in such a vehicle.

California has regulations on tailpipe greenhouse gases. Ontario is talking about emission controls.

Computer owner Christie Hone is frustrated by the Vista operating system on her brand new computer.

"When it runs certain programs, the screen completely lacks out. When you go to install any software that is not digitally signed, it wont install it. There are so many things running in there compared to my Windows XP," said Hone.

Hone could go on for half an hour about the problems she'd had with the Vista PC. Her web camera won't install and most of her old computer games won't run.

"I think I have maybe one game from XP that I can get onto the system," said Hone.

MAVERICKS PLAYBOOK

DALLAS -- For the second time in team history, the Mavericks swept the league's individual monthly awards.

Dirk Nowitzki was named Thursday as the Western Conference player of the month after averaging 27.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 54.2 percent from the field in February. Meanwhile, Avery Johnson was chosen as the Western Conference coach of the month after he guided the Mavs to a 10-0 record.

Back when the Mavs went 14-0 to start the 2002-03 season, Don Nelson was named the Western Conference Coach of the Month, while Steve Nash, Michael Finley and Nowitzki shared the conference's monthly award.

Not particularly big on individual honors, Johnson put the awards in perspective.

"You can't really win anything unless you win, and that's all we're really concerned about," he said.

Spire of Mortgage Hope. Kyiv Presents First Issue of Mortgage ...

Ukrgasbank came out with the local inaugural issue of mortgage notes within the project of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) "Initiative of Crediting Assistance (ICA) in association with Pragma Corporation.
After nearly a quarter of millennium since mortgage securities were firstly issued in the world history (that was in Lower Silesia (Prussia) in 1796), one of the key financial instruments finally came up in our country.

During the road-show on February 27, its initiators presented the three-year mortgage notes they issued in the amount of UAH 50 billion with the coupon rate of 10.5%. HVB Ukraine and Grant Thornton Ukraine were selected as Mortgage Pool Administrator and Auditor correspondingly.

Ukrgasbank explains that the small issue volume (even for the domestic financial markets) is due to the necessity to test and master the instrument which is absolutely new for the national market.

Cheap Performance Car Insurance

Your car insurance rate can go down, if you shop

The typical American driver will pay less for auto insurance this year than in 2006, according to the Insurance Information Institute. This is the first decrease in insurance premiums since 1999.

But the average annual cost for car insurance is still a hefty $847 (it was $851 in 2006).

There are ways to bring down your costs:

• Shop around for insurance quotes. Get estimates from at least three places.

• Consider insurance costs when buying a car. Some cars just cost more to insure.

• See if buying your homeowners and auto insurance from the same company is cheaper.

• Raise your deductible. But be sure you can afford to pay it if you have an accident.

• Ask for discounts.
